System prompts enable you to set a prompt that applies to every message that you send.
Imagine it as an additional prompt that gets added on to every prompt that you put in the chat box.
For example, if you want every response to be in German you can set the system prompt to “Answer in German.”
Then you can just ask questions or prompt however you’d like, but every answer will be in German whether you include that in each prompt or not because it’s set at the system level.
To use system prompts click the gear icon.
Then type your system prompt into the box below System Instructions.
Then click “Save System Instructions.”
When setting a system prompt, make sure not to include other settings in the prompt. For instance do not say “Use GPT-4o and look at pages 10-20". You should use the settings below the chat box to change the model or adjust the page range.
As mentioned above, you can use system prompts to set the language of responses.
Use a system prompt to set the desired structure of responses. For example, you can write “Answer in bullet point format” or “Bold key terms in the response.”
